He was styled "Jun" 1432 and "Sen" 1440, and was witness to Bacton Charter 8 Oct 1457. In 1457 he surrendered his lands to his son William, Jun. In his will on 13 July 1475 he had seven acres of demesne land called "Blakelond"; one piece of meadow called "Head halfaker" in meadow called Le Kur in Wyverston and one acre of meadow in divers pieces. He left money to use for images, organs and other ornaments of Bacton Church.23 Children:22

John was mentioned as John "Sen" son of William, Sen" in Cotton Bresworth Manor Rolls 1499; grant in Cotton to him and his father in September 1476, for which he swore fealty. He is considered ancestor of the Thordon branch of the Prettyman family. Children:24

JOHND PRATYMAN, (JohnE, WilliamF, WilliamG, WilliamH, JohnI), d bet 21 Feb 1559 & 26 Feb 1559 bur Bacton Church, Bacton, Suffolkshire, England, 26 Feb 1558/927 m Margaret Frere dau of John Frere of Wickham Skeith. Inquisiton on John’s death was taken at Stowmarket on 19 October 1559.25 He owned a messuage and lands in Bacton and Cotton, held of the Queen as of her Manor of Bacton, which he had inherited from John Pretyman, his father. He also owned two pieces of land, late Raynberds, in Bacton; tenements called "Gentlemans" and "Cobbles", and land called "Bradmedow in Bacton, held of Queen. Also a messuage, with curtilage, in Westhorpe, with divers lands, one called "Flabourewent"; a tenement there called the "Harte"; thirty acres in Fynnynham called "Chambers"; thirty six acres of pasture called the "Hall Close"; eighty acres called "Ashmans" in Gislingham held of the Queen as of her Honour of Eye; and lands in Cotton, Bacton, Fynnyngham, Westhorpe, Wickham, Stoke, and Thornham Magna, held respectively of Sir Thomas Cornwallis, Anthony Russhe, Esquire, and the Queen. Also lands in Old Newton, Gipping, Dagworth, Bacton and Cotton, held of Robert Spring, Esquire, and Sir John Terrell. John made his will on 21 February 1559:26

I will that Margret my wife shall have, in recompense of hir durye, hir dwellings in my mancon with the occupacon of all the londes belonging, and my tenement, called Cobbes duringe hir naturall life. John Pretyman my eldest sonne shall have my tenement in Cotton called Holmes with londs belonging, now in the tenure of hewghe Gage; also my tenementes, lands and underwoods in Wyckham, Fynnyngham, Thornham and Stoke; a tenement in Bacton called Bownsers and a close called Compence and Gipping laylonde close. Thomas Pretyman my sonne shall have, after the death of Margaret my wife, my mancon that I now dwell in called David Jones; my tenementes and londes called Cobbes; my tenement with londes called Gentlemans; lands, tenementes and meadowes in Newton called Russons; my close in Gislingham called Ashemans; and my close called Compence (except that is before bequeathed to John my son). I will that Thomas my sonne shall have Philipp’s ffelde and the gresse close and Wilbone medowe as it lyeth within the towne of Cotton: he to enter into all seid londes when he come to the age of two and twenty yeres. For defaulte of issue, lawefullye begotten, of his body, I will seide tenementes and londes remeyne vnto John and William my sonnes and ther heyeres, to be equallye devided between them. Vnto William my sonne my tenementes and londes in Westhorpe, Wyverstone, Walsham and Backtone, except what before willed, and a close in Gislingham called …. He to enter said londes, &c., when he comes to the age of xxiij yeres. For default of yssue of his bodye these to remeyne to John and Thomas my sonnes. Residue to my executor, and also the occupieng of all my londes vntill seid sonnes come to lawfull age.

John the son of John was at the age of two and twenty years and three months at the time of the inquisition on John Pretyman’s death on 19 October 1559. Children:27

Muskett stated that Thomas submitted in 1588 to defence against Armada.28 On 9 April 1601, the inquisition on the death of Thomas Pretyman, yeoman, was held. "He held a close called "Ashemans", containing sixty acres in Gislingham; two messuages, two cotages, four gardens, sixty acres of land, twenty acres of meadow, one hundred twenty acres of pasture and four acres of wood in Bacton, Coton and Newton." By charter, dated 8 September 1600, he enfeoffed John Pretyman of Heasley, gent., and Thomas Harwel of Felsham, gent. (lands & tenements already conveyed to Fyrmin Denny, Esquire & John Pretyman, gent. being excepted) in Ashemans in Gislingham to his own use for life, and then to his heir of his body begotten; and, failing such heir, to the use of Robert Pretyman, his second son & heir of his body begotten; and failing such heir to these to John Pretyman his third son & the heirs of his body, and for lack of such, to his own use and that of his right heirs for ever.28 Rachel left a will on 12 October 1626 proved at Bury 26 June 1627. As Rachell Prettyman of Thelnetham, widow, she made a bequest to daughter Martha Smyth; grandaughter Rachell Baxter; granddaughter Dorothie Baxter; Rachell Pretyman, daughter of Henrie Prettyman; Thomas Prettyman; Thomas Alston; John Alston; Dorothie Alston; Jane Alston; Marie Alston; Ellener Alston; cousin Woodward; poor of Thelnetham; poor of Bacton; and John Prettyman, grandchild. She appointed William Gooche of Tuddenham, gent. her son-in-law to be executor.29 Children:30
