of Robert Burton and Catherine Cotton. Thomas served on the Sussex County Grand
Jury on 4 May 1710.271 Thomas purchased on 8 May 1719 200
acres of "Corn Burry" from his brother, William Prettyman.272
"Corn Burry" was in Indian River Hundred, Sussex County, on south side
of Bark Creek (Herring Creek). On the same day John, father of Thomas, sold to
his son, William the portion of "Tower Hill" south of Beaver Dam
Branch (Prettyman Branch, Black Oak Gut or Black Hog Gut) on which Thomas had
been living.273 John, the father, lived on the portion
north of Beaver Dam Branch.273 Thomas made his will on 17
May 1719 and it was probated on 17 July 1719:274

The will was witnessed by Hugh Verdin, Elizabeth Walker and Anderson
Parker.
It is clear to me that Comfort, wife of Thomas, was the daughter of Robert
Burton and maybe Catherine Cotton. Herndon249 in his
article on Robert Burton puts forth the idea that Comfort was the daughter of
Robert’s second wife, Comfort Bagwell, by her first husband, Perry Leatherbury.
Herndon developed this idea because Perry and Comfort Leatherbury had daughters
named Comfort, Patience and Ann. He felt it was too much of a coincidence for a
man with daughters named Comfort, Patience and Ann to marry a widow with
daughters of those same names. In his will275 Robert
Burton very clearly calls them his daughters, and this was at a time when
stepdaughters would have been called daughter-in-laws. Herndon249
proves that Robert Burton followed that custom when he mentions that in Accomack
County records Robert petitioned the court for administration of his son-in-law,
Perry Leatherbury. In Sussex County deeds276, Comfort
Burton Prettyman refers to Robert Burton as her father, and Robert is referred
to as grandfather to her children, Thomas and Elizabeth. In his will275,
made 16 September 1724 and probated 16 Oct 1725, Robert Burton names his
daughter Comfort Walker and her two children by her first husband, Thomas
Prettyman. It would appear that one of the children of Thomas named in his will
has died. From other records, it seems that Thomas, Jr and Elizabeth are still
living, so it must have been Robert that has died. Later Elizabeth, as Elizabeth
Coulter, petitioned the Sussex County Orphans Court on 17 June 1763 for division
of land owned by her brother, Robert Prettyman.277 In the
petition, it is stated that Robert Prettyman died intestate and in his minority
and at time of his death owned 112 acres of land in Indian River Hundred.
Comfort Burton Prettyman married second Thomas Walker276,
and she married third Rees Wolf276. Children:

Inloe daughter of Thomas Inloe & Mary Hill.278 Thomas
Inloe had died by 17 May 1735 as his inventory record shows on that date that
Mary Hill Inloe had married William Rodney. Thomas Prettyman’s widow,
Elizabeth Prettyman married second Joseph Wharton.278
Tabitha Inloss, daughter of Thomas Inloss, Thomas Prettyman and Elizabeth
Prettyman, who was daughter of Thomas Inloss, on 26 April 1762 sold to William
Rodney their interest in 100 acres of land called "What You Please".280
In 1734, Thomas Prettyman was living in Baltimore Hundred, Somerset Co.,
Maryland as he appears on the 1734 tax list of Somerset County as Tho Briteyman
[Prettyman]. He and his neighbors were listed in 1734 in the following order
Dennis Morris; William, John and Joshua Burton; William Pepper; John Morris;
Richard Renolds; Richard Jefferson; Thomas Briteyman [Prettyman]; Ebenezer
Jones; Thomas Carey; Thomas West Jr; and Jacob Ingrum.281
In 1735, he and his neighbors were listed in this order Thomas Carey, John
Morris, Dennis Morris, William Waker, Richard Runnels, Ebenezer Jones, William
Radney, Thomas Prittyman, James Murray, William Burton, John Burton, Joshua
Burton, William Pepper.282 Thomas patented a tract of land
in Somerset County in 1741 called "White Oak Hill" and on 28 December
1741 he was granted land called "This or None".283
I think that Thomas married Elizabeth Inloe in period 1730-33 since he was
living in Somerset County in 1734. His father-in-law first appeared on the tax
lists of Baltimore Hundred in 1727 and was on the 1728-1731 lists.281
Thomas did not own land at that time in Somerset County, and the only reason I
can see for him to move to Somerset County is to live with his wife’s family.
In 1749 Thomas Prettyman was a private along with Thomas Jones, Jobs Ingram,
Robert Burton, William Rodney, William Townsend, Thomas West and others in the
Footman under the command of Captain Joseph Dirickson’s Maryland Militia, and
Ebenezer Jones was a Sergeant in the unit.284 On 2 May
1750, Thomas sold "Corn Bury", the 200 acres of land he had inherited
from his father.285 He purchased as Thomas Prettyman of
Worcester County, Maryland, 53 acres of land called "Waples Desire"in
Indian River Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware from William Waples. The purchase
was made on 2 August 1758, and the land bordered land granted to Thomas
Prettyman, Thomas’ father; "Cheat" and John Holmes.286
Thomas Prettyman of Worcester County, Maryland, on 3 August 1758 sold to William
Waples the 112 acres granted to his father in Sussex County.285 On
3 August 1762, Rees Woolf of Sussex, Yeoman, and Comfort, his wife a daughter of
Robert Burton, deeded to Thomas Prettyman their interest in land in Sussex
County. This land per deed was part of 1100 acres of land owned by Robert Burton
and willed by Robert to his daughter Comfort and her two children, Thomas and
Elizabeth Prettyman. The deed also states that Robert was father of Comfort and
grandfather to her two children, Thomas and Elizabeth Prettyman.287
Thomas Prettyman Sr, of Worcester County, Maryland, deeded to his son, Thomas
Pretyman, Jr, of Sussex County, Delaware, for love and affection and better
maintenance and livehood 128 acres, of land in Indian River Hundred, Sussex
County on 7 September 1763.288 On 1 March 1765, Thomas
sold to Burton Waples the land he had inherited from his grandfather Robert
Burton.289 On 28 February 1776, Thomas was granted 94
acres of land called "Good Luck" in Sussex County adjoining on east
side of "White Oak Hill".290 Then on 4 June 1776
there was granted to Thomas Prettyman, late of Worcester County, Maryland, a
resurvey of "White Oak Hill" now to be called "White Oak Hill
Enlarged" for an additional 50 acres making in all 150 acres.291
This land bordered "Kenny’s Luck" and land of Robert Prettyman (See
Plat 3). Thomas’s land was on Tussocky Branch now Almshouse Branch and Horse
Pound Swamp Ditch which flows eastward into Stockley Branch which in turn
empties into Cow Bridge Branch below Morris Millpond. Cow Bridge Branch flows
south to Millsboro and is the boundary between Indian River Hd and Dagsboro Hd.
Hubert Prettyman describes Thomas’ land as being in the area south of the
Sussex Prison land and before 1809 the County Almshouse land. Thomas made his
will on 26 February 1790 and it was probated on 26 October 1790. As Thomas
Prettyman, Planter, he mentions his wife Elizabeth Prettyman; sons William,
George, Burton, Robert, and Thomas Prettyman; and daughters Hessy Prettyman,
Comfort Rogers, Ann Morris, Tabitha Morris, Mary Ingram, Patience Noles
[Knowles], Sarah Marvel, Agnes Williams and Isabell Pepper. Thomas gave the
plantation where he lived to his wife and his son, William, and at his wife’s
death it was to be William’s. He gave George one half of his land on north
side of Tusseca Branch, and the other half to Burton. Robert received one half
of land on north side of Horse Pound Branch called "Hog Quarter", and
Comfort Rogers received the other half of "Hog Quarter". He appointed
his wife, Elizabeth, and his son, William, his executors.292
I believe that Thomas had two sons not mentioned in his will. When the
Mason-Dixon line was ran the area of Worcester County, Maryland where Thomas
lived became Dagsberry Hundred of Sussex County, Delaware. In 1778 Richard
Prettyman was on the Dagsberry Hundred tax list, and in 1779 Rees or Reese
Prettyman was on the 1779 Dagsberry tax list with Thomas and his sons Robert and
George. Thomas’ son William did not appear on on the Dagsberry Hundred tax
list until 1783.293 Rease Prettyman served as a Private in
1782 in the Delaware Regiment in the Revolutionary War.294
It is possible that Rease was killed during the war. Thomas’ son William named
a son Richard and a son Rease. Did he do this because they both were a few years
older than he was and they were still at home with him when he was a young boy?
Then when he was married and had sons he wanted to honor his dead brothers.
Elizabeth on 10 February 1792 made a deed of gift to her daughters; Agnes
Coffin, wife of Nehemiah Coffin; Eby [Isabell] Pepper, wife of Eli Pepper; and
Hester Warren, wife of Kendle Warren at the death of Elizabeth and a certain
Joseph Wharton.295 She deeded to the daughters eight
horned cattle; three beds and furniture, one horse; twelve sheep; seven hogs;
seven pigs and 24 pounds cash. Elizabeth may have only been providing for her
youngest children, but she did single them out. This raises a question if she is
a different Elizabeth than Elizabeth Inloe. Thomas also named his younger son,
William as an administrator of his estate instead of one of his older sons, and
it appears that Thomas had a good relationship with his older sons by deeding
them land, etc. By naming William as an administrator of his estate was he
insuring that the children by his second wife would be provided for after he
died. If Elizabeth Enloe was the mother of all of Thomas’ children then she
had seventeen living children which would seem difficult for one woman in the
1700’s. It does seem that Thomas was married at least two times. The Wolfe
family used the given names Rees and Reece, and could the last Elizabeth have
been a Wolfe? Richard and Reece were certainly not Prettyman names in this time
period. Thomas had an opportunity to meet the Wolfe family as attending St.
George Episcopal Church was the family of Francis, Warrington and William Wolfe
in 1700’s.296 The Wolfe connection is just a theory, and
Thomas could have named a son, Rees or Rease, after his stepfather, Rees Wolf.
His stepfather had grandsons, Reece and Richard Paynter, by his daughter, Mary
Paynter.297 Children:

IL son of David Marvel and (?Elizabeth) Prettyman). The mother of Prettyman
Marvel is undetermined, but some Marvel historians have commonly accepted that
Sarah Prettyman, wife of David Marvel, was Prettyman’s mother. This appears to
be impossible since Sarah and David were not married until 5 January 1789.303
Levin Wilson, the first Historian of the Knowles and Marvel families, in 1896
stated that David’s wife was Comfort Prettyman. David’s wife was the great
grandmother of Wilson.304 Wilson states that his mother
was named Comfort after her grandmother. Wilson may be correct and if he is who
was this Comfort Prettyman? She was not the daughter of Thomas Prettyman and
Elizabeth Enloe. It is obvious that Prettyman Marvel’s mother was a
Prettyman. It is probable
that Prettyman Marvel’s mother was Comfort dau of William Prettyman.305 It is my theory that
Comfort died and that David Marvel married second a widow of one of the brothers
of Sarah. When this widow died then David married Sarah.
David Marvel in his will named his daughter-in-law (stepdaughter), Polla
Prettyman. It appears that David Marvel married three times and one of those marriages was to
a widow Prettyman? In fall of 1795, James Knowles and his wife, Patience Marvel
Knowles, moved by covered wagon to Greene County, Georgia. Patience was the
sister of Prettyman Marvel and in 1796 Prettyman and his family went by sea to
Greene County, Georgia. David Knowles, son of Richard Knowles, Jr and Prudence
Marvel, went with his Uncle Prettyman to Georgia.306
Prettyman first purchased land in Georgia in 1805 when he bought 211 acres of
land from James Knowles.306 In December 1808, Prettyman
Marvel and David Knowles decided to leave Georgia for the Territory of Indiana.
157 Reports of Indian massacres caused Prettyman and Lavina to stop in
Livingston County, Kentucky during the summer of 1809.306
Elisha Marvel and his wife, Orpha, sister of Lavina lived in Livingston County.
157 Elisha and Orpha had lived in Greene County, Georgia, but left before
Prettyman and Lavina. 157 Elisha Marvel and his brother,
Eli, first appear on the Livingston County tax list in 1809.153
Prettyman Marvel returned to Georgia in 1810 to finish some business, and when
he left in November 1811 Jess Knowles, son of James and Patience, decided to
also move to Indiana. The Marvels apparently reached Indiana in late 1811.302
In 1812, David Knowles and his wife, Nancy Piper Knowles,
left Kentucky to join the other Marvels in Gibson County, Indiana.302

south side of Kenney’s Branch and adjacent to 100 acres of land laid off for
the wife, Rhoda, of John Ennis by instructions of the will of Richard Jefferson.
The 75 ¾ acres was land that Elizabeth had inherited from her father, Richard
Jefferson. Also on 27 Dec 1796, Thomas and wife, Elizabeth, deeded part of
"Delay" to her brother, Job Jefferson, and was part of the land
inherited from her father. The land was adjacent to that owned by Job Jefferson
and John Ennis. Thomas made his will on 29 June 1814, and it was probated on 19
July 1814. He named his wife, Elizabeth, and after her death, his nephew, Thomas
Prettyman son of Wingate Prettyman, was to inherit all of his lands.315

sister of Richard Knowles that married Prudence Marvel and of Edmund that
married Patience Prettyman. Zachariah was a member of the Commission for Review
of Fines for the 1st Company of the 10th Regiment of
Delaware Militia. In 1801 he was Captain of that company. Zachariah died
intestate, and his wife, Asseneth Prettyman, was appointed administrator of his
estate. Asseneth and Thomas Marvel were granted an estate administration on 30
July 1804. On 21 Sep 1860, Nancy K. Green petitioned the Sussex County Orphan’s
Court for a division of the lands of Zachariah Prettyman. Zachariah had 110
acres of land in Dagsboro Hundred that was part of "Kollock’s
Choice" and Sheep Pen Branch flowed through part of it. The records says
that he had four children survive him, James, George, Lavinia and Nancy
Prettyman. James died intestate and without issue. Lavinia married John Truitt,
who conveyed their interest in the land to George Prettyman, who was also dead
by 21 Sep 1860. Nancy married Jesse Green, who died 25 Feb 1860. They had five
children, James David, George, Joseph and Jesse Green. Nancy wanted to divide
the land among the sons. It is interesting that it took nearly 56 years before
Zachariah’s estate was finally settled. Children:316
