COLONEL HUGHS REPORT

COLONEL HUGHS REPORT OF 28 April 1864

Colonel Hughs of 25th Tennessee Infantry (Rebels) was cutoff behind enemy lines and operated for several months in the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee. In his report he listed several fights with Federal Troops. In his report he states: On the 14th of February I was rejoined by Major Bledsoe, and on the 15th we attacked and defeated a party of bushwhackers and tories numbering some less than 100, under Captains Dowdy and Beaty, killing 17, capturing 2, and effectually dispersing the whole gang. On February 15th 1864 Dowdy was commanding Company D First Tennessee Mounted Infantry and had 55 men. The muster out roster for Company D shows names of all men that died in service to their country. Company D had no men killed on 15th February so all killed must have been in Beaty’s command?? Very Questionable.! This type of reporting shows why Rebels always won ever Battle but lost war.
