Joseph appears to have been a member of the Baptist Church in South Carolina. On 22 Aug 1802 William Levann, William Loftis and Levinah Hail (dau of Joseph) joined by experience the Tyger Baptist Church. The prior day Rev. John Tubb had brought his Church from the head of Enore, and was received in Tyger Church as a Ruling Elder. In Sept or Oct 1802, Joab Haild, John Crafford, Archer Dill Junr, Nelly Page, Patty Yarbrour, Polly Jackson and Peggy Barrett were received by experience in the Church. Names mentioned in Tyger Church in 1803 were David & Joseph Barrett, Keziah, Stephen and Letty Dill. On 22 Dec 1804, Joab Hail and Joseph Dill made statements (the latter mentioning his brother). Also mentioned in 1804 were Solomon Loftese and David, Joseph & Reuben Barrett. Joab & Lemina Haile were granted their letters of dismissal. Then on 26 Oct 1805, William Loftise and Stephen Dill made statements. Discussed Sister Lettice Dill marrying Jesse Walden. Lettice Dill, who is married, is excommunicated. In 1806 Runnels & Stephen Dill and Major Barrett mentioned, and Joseph Dill and wife were granted letters of dismissal on 27 Sep 1806. The Tyger Baptist Church was recorded consistantly throughout most of its early history as "Head of Tyger River" or Head of Tyger" Church. Minutes of the Brushy Creek Church dated June 2, 1794 refer to this church as "Concord Meeting House Tyger River. It is situated in northern Greenville County on Hwy 414, one mile northeast of Tigerville. The earliest Tyger Church minute book in the Baptist Historical Collection at Furman University begins on June 21, 1800. However, the church had been functioning for some time prior to this date. (Storey, Bill & Anne K. McCuen, "Genealogical Abstracts from Greenville County, SC: The Earliest Minute Books of Ten Baptist Churches, 1794-1850", 1992, by authors, pages 251-265. Joseph probably moved to Smith County, Tennessee, based on his letter of dismissal from Tyger Baptist Church, and probably was following Rev Tubb to Smith County. Joab Hale of Smith Co., TN, on 8 Dec 1814 sold to William L. Dill of Greenville Dist, SC, for $150.00 130 acres of land in Greenville District bordering on Beaverdam Creek branch of Middle Tyger River, Richard Henson and Streats corner.
