left is Robert Ray, Milas Ray, Rowena Ray, Carrie Ray Netherton, and grandson
Bill Ray. Stephen was the son of Joseph A. Ray and Lucinda F. Hawes Ray
(granddaughter to Major William Pennigton Quarles). Joseph A. Ray, one of the
first settlers in the Double Springs area, owned a store in that area in which
the post office was housed for many years. He was a major in the Mexican War.
He was also the first County Court Clerk of Putnam Co. after the Civil War. He
died while holding that office. Land for the Double Springs Cemetery was given
